Australia and Egypt will meet in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 with a unique and controversial history between the two nations. The Socceroos face the Pharaohs on Saturday after previous encounters that included alleged match fixing during a 2010 international friendly and Olympic heartbreak in Tokyo, adding extra intrigue to their first senior World Cup meeting.
While the two countries have met only a handful of times, each contest has carried significant storylines that continue to resonate ahead of their latest clash.
2010 friendly overshadowed by match fixing allegations
The most infamous meeting between Australia and Egypt came in Cairo in November 2010.
Egypt led 2-0 late in the friendly before Bulgarian referee Anton Genov awarded a controversial penalty against Socceroos captain Lucas Neill after minimal contact on Mohamed Nagy.
Mohamed Zidan converted from the spot as Egypt secured a 3-0 victory.
Australia coach Holger Osieck questioned the decision immediately after the match.
"I do not know what kind of penalty it was, the only person who saw the penalty was the referee," Osieck said.
"Nobody knew what was going on, only God and the referee."
The incident attracted renewed attention four years later when convicted Singaporean match fixer Wilson Raj Perumal claimed in his memoir that the match had been manipulated to ensure at least three goals were scored.
Perumal alleged his syndicate profited heavily from betting markets linked to the fixture, claiming the late penalty completed the planned outcome.
Those allegations have never resulted in the match result being overturned, but they remain one of the most controversial episodes involving the Socceroos.
Schwarzer called for investigation
Former Australia goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer later urged FIFA to investigate the allegations after Perumal's claims became public.
"I think there should be an investigation from the top. FIFA should investigate it," Schwarzer told the ABC in 2014.
He said the officiating had appeared questionable during the match and acknowledged the allegations aligned with concerns players had at the time.
Former Socceroo Luke Wilkshire also reflected on the controversial penalty years later, describing it as soft while admitting players had no idea there may have been wider issues surrounding the fixture.

Olympic defeat still fresh for Socceroos
Australia's most recent meeting with Egypt came at the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021.
The Olyroos required only a draw in their final group match to advance after opening the tournament with a famous victory over Argentina.
Instead, Egypt claimed a 2-0 win to eliminate Australia from the competition.
Several members of Egypt's current World Cup squad featured in that Olympic success, while Harry Souttar, Connor Metcalfe and Cammy Devlin represented Australia.
Metcalfe admitted the defeat remains a motivating factor.
"They ruined our dream. So, yeah, I guess you could say it's a bit of a revenge, personally," he said.
Earlier meeting decided by penalties
The nations first met at the 1987 Presidents Cup in South Korea.
After a scoreless draw, Australia prevailed in a penalty shootout to record its first victory over Egypt.
That result remains Australia's only success against the Pharaohs heading into the latest encounter.
High stakes in World Cup knockout clash
Unlike the previous meetings, this encounter carries World Cup knockout implications.
Australia enters the Round of 32 seeking another memorable victory under coach Tony Popovic, while Egypt aims to continue its impressive tournament run.
The winner will progress to the Round of 16, with both nations hoping to create more history on football's biggest stage.
Although the rivalry is relatively brief, its history includes controversy, disappointment and dramatic moments that ensure another compelling chapter awaits.
