Michael Vaughan has called for sweeping changes to England's cricket leadership following Ben Stokes's retirement from international cricket. The former England captain urged head coach Brendon McCullum and managing director Rob Key to step aside after England's 160 run defeat to New Zealand at Trent Bridge sealed a 2-1 Test series loss and extended the team's poor run of results.
Stokes announced his retirement after the third Test, ending a celebrated international career and his tenure as England captain. His departure has intensified scrutiny on England's direction ahead of a busy international schedule.
Vaughan says "enough is enough"
Speaking on the Stick to Cricket podcast, Vaughan said England's recent performances were no longer acceptable and called for major changes.
"When I saw that on the fourth evening last week, I went, 'Nah, we can't accept that' as ex players in the game," Vaughan said.
"It was that period that I watched and I went, 'Nah, enough is enough'. English cricket has got to be better than that."
England has won only two of its past 10 Test matches, following defeats against Australia and New Zealand and a drawn home series against India.
McCullum and Key under pressure
Vaughan questioned whether McCullum remains the right coach to lead England, despite praising his character.
"I think Baz McCullum is a great guy but he's not a great coach and for England, as ex players and fans of English cricket, we should be aiming to be the number one team in the world and at the minute we are ranked seventh," Vaughan said.
He also criticised the circumstances surrounding England's only recent Test victories.
"We've won two games in 10 matches, and those two wins have come at Lord's on a cesspit and the MCG which was a two dayer, so the only two games that we've won have been on farmers' fields."
Vaughan added that England should not accept those results as progress.
"I want change. I've seen enough. I care passionately about English cricket and I hate watching that."

Rob Key's position questioned
Vaughan also suggested managing director Rob Key should face scrutiny over England's performances.
Key has overseen England's coaching and selection structure since replacing Ashley Giles in 2022 and appointed McCullum as Test coach before expanding his role across all formats in 2024.
"You've got to say that Rob Key's job is on the line. It has to be on the line," Vaughan said.
"It wouldn't surprise me if Rob Key goes."
Vaughan also compared the current setup with former England coach Andy Flower.
"They're not being well coached. You are telling me if Andy Flower was in charge this team would be getting the results they are getting? No chance."
England enters new era
Stokes's retirement marks the end of one of England's most influential modern careers and leaves the national side searching for a new Test captain.
The all rounder played a pivotal role in England's successes across all formats and became one of the defining players of his generation through memorable Ashes performances and the 2019 Cricket World Cup triumph.
His retirement now places even greater focus on England's leadership structure as the team attempts to rebuild.

Pakistan series looms
England's immediate focus shifts to white ball cricket, beginning with the opening Twenty20 international against India at Chester le Street.
However, attention will soon return to the Test arena, with England scheduled to host Pakistan in the first Test at Headingley in August.
Whether those matches are played under the current coaching structure remains uncertain following Vaughan's strong criticism and growing pressure after another disappointing Test series.
