Jai July has officially launched, with the NRL announcing a month long fundraising campaign to support South Sydney forward Jai Arrow in his battle with motor neurone disease. The initiative will feature the World’s Biggest Birthday Party at the Rabbitohs' clash with Newcastle on July 12, alongside a series of fundraising commitments from the NRL and its commercial partners aimed at rallying the rugby league community behind Arrow.
The centrepiece of the campaign will coincide with Arrow's birthday when South Sydney hosts the Knights at Accor Stadium.
NRL rallies behind Arrow
ARL Commission chairman Peter V'landys said the rugby league community would unite to support one of its own throughout July.
"This will be a case of the game uniting behind our own."
"We are a family. Jai and his family need our help and they will get it. One of the best things about Rugby League is its ability to unite for an important cause and they do not get more important than this."
"On July 12, we will throw the biggest birthday party in the world for Jai. It will be a huge occasion with the whole game involved."
"Don't bring presents. Bring a donation. And help Jai get through this with everyone in the rugby league community behind him."
Major fundraising initiatives announced
Several sponsors have committed to supporting the Jai July campaign throughout the month.
Coca-Cola South Pacific will donate $1,000 for every try scored across NRL, NRLW and State of Origin matches during July.
Budget Direct will contribute $1,000 for every Rabbitohs try scored during the month.
Trading card licensee Select has also pledged $40,000 to encourage players to celebrate tries with an arrow gesture in support of Arrow.
Family entertainment at Accor Stadium
The July 12 celebration will include several activities designed to encourage families to attend.
Children's entertainment group The Wiggles will perform during the event, while two children will receive free entry with every adult ticket purchased.
A giant birthday cake will be presented to Arrow following the match, with supporters also invited onto the field after full time as part of the celebrations.
The NRL hopes the month long campaign will generate significant fundraising support while highlighting the rugby league community's commitment to helping Arrow and his family.
