Socceroos vs Egypt will be shown in more Queensland pubs and clubs after the state government confirmed a last-minute licensed venue trial for Saturday’s 4am AEST World Cup knockout match.
Australia have reached the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup for only the third time, giving fans across the country another early-morning chance to gather for a major national team moment. The Queensland change allows approved venues to trade from 3am to 7am on game day.

Queensland Opens Door For Fans
Attorney-General Deb Frecklington said the Crisafulli Government wanted Queensland fans to share the occasion in a public setting.
“There’s nothing like coming together with a crowd to cheer on the Socceroos, and we want Queenslanders to be part of that atmosphere,” she said.
“We’ve found a way through and taken a practical approach so our pubs and community clubs can open and create a great game-day experience for fans right across the state.
“This is about making it easier for people to get together, support our national team and enjoy the excitement, while still ensuring the safety for Queenslanders and the responsible service of alcohol.”
Venues Must Meet Conditions
The trial is not a free pass for all licensed venues. Queensland pubs and clubs must be open mainly to broadcast the match and need approval from the Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation.
Applications must be submitted by 2pm on Thursday, July 2. All usual liquor laws still apply, including responsible service of alcohol rules.
New South Wales already has special event extended trading for eligible venues, while Victoria, Western Australia and South Australia allow venues to apply for special event extensions.
Tasmania, the Australian Capital Territory and Northern Territory can also issue out-of-hours permits, although extra conditions may apply after midnight.
The announcement adds to a big week for Australian football, with Queensland also securing Socceroos exhibition matches against Brazil in Brisbane and Townsville in September.
