Penrith Panthers have granted four time premiership winner Moses Leota permission to speak with rival NRL clubs ahead of the official free agency period. The veteran prop has received the club's approval to test his value on the open market as Penrith prepares for a challenging salary cap period with several premiership stars coming off contract at the end of 2027.
Leota has been a cornerstone of the Panthers' sustained success, making 216 first grade appearances since debuting in 2016 while also representing New Zealand in eight Test matches.
Panthers Back Leota's Decision
Panthers chief executive Matt Cameron confirmed the club approved a request from Leota's management to begin discussions with rival clubs before November 1.
"This cohort of players have earned the right to determine their futures and we're happy to work with them to ensure everyone gets the right outcome," Cameron told CODE Sports.
"Moses' manager came to us and asked for permission to test his value on the open market. Given Moses' service and loyalty to the club, we were happy to accommodate his request.
"It doesn't necessarily mean he is leaving and we will keep the lines of communication open with him and his manager."
Salary Cap Pressure Building
Penrith faces significant roster decisions over the coming years, with a host of key players eligible to negotiate new deals before the end of the 2027 season.
The list includes Nathan Cleary, Isaah Yeo, Brian To'o, Liam Martin, Mitch Kenny, Blaize Talagi and Paul Alamoti, creating pressure on the club to balance its salary cap while attempting to keep its premiership core together.
Allowing Leota to gauge his market value provides both player and club with greater clarity before formal negotiations intensify.
Expansion Clubs Expected to Show Interest
Leota's management is expected to begin discussions with interested clubs immediately.
Expansion franchises Perth Bears and PNG Chiefs are reportedly among the clubs likely to express interest as they continue assembling their inaugural squads with experienced representative talent.
Despite the expected attention from rival clubs, Leota is understood to be content at Penrith and remains keen to stay with the Panthers if an agreement can be reached.
His experience, leadership and consistency have made him one of the NRL's most respected front rowers throughout the Panthers' premiership era.
