Reports of alarming Brisbane Broncos player unrest under head coach Michael Maguire are intensifying following a dramatic collapse in their 2026 National Rugby League campaign. The reigning premiers set an unwanted 73-year record after a loss to the Sydney Roosters, becoming the first defending champions since 1953 to drop seven consecutive games.
The internal pressure has sparked fears of a mass player exodus from the Brisbane Broncos. Concerns are mounting that the intense environment is wearing down the championship-winning squad.
This ongoing crisis comes as other clubs look to steady their campaigns, much like how the Canberra Raiders end losing streak as controversial Bunker call frustrates Dragons in recent action.
Details of the Emotional Team Meeting
Journalist Brent Read exposed deep fractures within the club, revealing details of a highly charged team review session. The head coach reportedly became overwhelmed while addressing his struggling roster during the week.
“There was a meeting last week and Madge got quite emotional with the playing group. Look, he’s an emotional guy. That’s part of the way he coaches,” Brent Read revealed on NRL360.
“Apparently last week he was in the verge of tears talking to the players about how much love he has for them and how he wants them to achieve,” Brent Read added.
Roster Uncertainty and Exodus Fears
The Brisbane Broncos have won just five of 15 matches this year, making a finals appearance look completely impossible. Journalist Dean Ritchie offered a scathing review of their current lack of motivation on the field.
“They seem to have lost their desire, their will to win. You could go on with what they need to find. They’re well and truly gone (this season),” Dean Ritchie stated.
When television host Braith Anasta questioned if athletes were waiting to see out the coach's tenure before deciding their futures, the response was definitive. Multiple figures are rumored to be highly unsettled.
“I don’t think there’s any doubt about that,” Brent Read replied regarding the contract hesitation.
“They’ve got some guys who haven’t re-signed. There’s other rumours about other players who are unhappy,” Brent Read noted.
Fans can track the upcoming schedule on the official National Rugby League website as the club prepares to face the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks.
