The Brisbane Broncos season plunged into deeper turmoil on June 29, 2026, when club management officially stood down rising winger Josiah Karapani. The extreme disciplinary action follows an early Sunday morning roadside interception on the Pacific Motorway at MacGregor where Queensland Police caught the outside back driving a vehicle while significantly over his legal limit. This sudden axing matters immensely for the struggling Brisbane squad as they desperate try to arrest a harrowing seven match losing streak, forcing head coach Michael Maguire to radically overhaul his backline ahead of a crucial do or die battle against the Cronulla Sharks.
Roadside Interception and Police Charges
The 23-year-old outside back was initially pulled over by traffic authorities for traveling at 119km/h in a designated 100km/h zone. Following a comprehensive roadside inspection, officers hit the Brisbane star with a mountain of steep traffic infringements. Karapani was subsequently transported directly to the Holland Park Police Station for a formal breath analysis, where he returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.037.
Because he is a provisional license holder in Queensland, the young winger is bound by strict zero blood alcohol constraints. Consequently, police issued him a formal notice to appear in court on July 21, adding to a rapidly growing list of serious off-field misdemeanors.
The Breakdown of Police Infringements
Speeding: Exceeding the speed limit by 19km/h on a major motorway.
Licensing Breaches: Blatant failure to display mandatory provisional P plates.
Compliance Violations: Operating an unregistered and uninsured vehicle on public roads.
This reckless incident represents Karapani's second major behavioral strike of the year. Back in March, the NRL Integrity Unit monitored the player closely after Queensland Police banned him from the Fortitude Valley entertainment precinct for public nuisance behavior.
“It’s important everyone knows the standards and culture of this club that we are setting is above any player or person in this organisation,” captain Adam Reynolds warned during the previous infraction. “Everyone needs to jump on board or you risk facing some time away from the team.”
The club immediately notified league officials of the latest breach, and the player will spend indefinite time in reserve grade.
