Australia's FIFA World Cup campaign has reached a decisive stage, with former Socceroos goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer urging coach Tony Popovic to recall Mat Ryan for Friday's group-stage match against Paraguay in San Francisco. The match carries major importance for Australia, as a draw would be enough to secure a place in the knockout rounds. Schwarzer believes Ryan's experience could prove vital despite Patrick Beach performing strongly in the opening two games.
Schwarzer Wants Experience in Goal
Beach impressed during Australia's clean-sheet victory over Türkiye and continued to show promise against the United States. However, Schwarzer feels the pressure of a World Cup decider calls for Ryan's leadership and experience.
"This is really a dilemma for me because Patrick Beach has done really well," Schwarzer said.
"We're talking about a World Cup, we're talking about international level and experience and so forth, so that's why I think it's harsh on Patrick Beach but I would go for the experience."
Ryan, Australia's captain, has earned 104 international caps and is appearing at his fourth World Cup.
Irankunda Pushes for Bigger Role
Young attacker Nestory Irankunda also remains in focus after coming off the bench against the United States.
"It was the biggest game. It was the game that I was most looking forward to. I would have loved to play from the start and create some things and score some goals," Irankunda said.
