Essendon midfielder Zach Merrett has spoken candidly about the intense attention surrounding his playing future, revealing the speculation has led to difficult personal moments during the 2026 AFL season. Speaking at the AFL's Kids Footy Month launch on June 24 in Australia, the former Bombers captain said constant discussion about a possible move away from Essendon has taken a mental toll and highlighted the challenges elite athletes face under public scrutiny.
Merrett Addresses Ongoing Speculation
After attempting to join Hawthorn during last year's trade period, Merrett continues to be linked with a move away from Essendon. The six-time Crichton Medallist said some reporting had become excessive.
"I was probably naive to the amount of chatter and focus and noise that will present this year," Merrett said.
"A lot of it's been justified. Some of it has probably borderline crossed the line with the obsessive nature of some personnel in the media."
Merrett revealed he had privately challenged some media figures over what he believes were inaccurate narratives.
Focus Remains on Football
Despite the noise, the 30-year-old remains committed to improving his game while helping a young Essendon side. He has recently shifted between midfield, forward and defensive roles under interim coach Dean Solomon.
"It's a pretty attractive role," Merrett said of the Bombers coaching position.
Merrett confirmed he will wait until the end of the season before deciding on his AFL future.
