North Melbourne coach Alastair Clarkson has reminded his players to respect AFL regulations after midfielder Jy Simpkin received an official warning for publicly criticising the league. The warning followed Simpkin's comments describing the AFL and Match Review Officer process as "laughable" after teammate Paul Curtis received a three-match suspension. The issue became a major talking point this week as the AFL signalled it could impose tougher penalties on future public criticism of officiating decisions.
Clarkson urges players to respect AFL rules
Speaking ahead of North Melbourne's Round 16 clash against Essendon, Clarkson made it clear that players understand the consequences of speaking out publicly.
"We gave our players another reminder yesterday that the rules and regulations were in place for a reason, and whether we like them or not, they're the rules we signed up for at the start," Clarkson said.
The veteran coach admitted he has previously paid fines for similar incidents during his coaching career and acknowledged that breaking league rules often comes with financial consequences.
North Melbourne enters Sunday's match at Marvel Stadium with momentum after two straight victories. However, the Kangaroos will be without key ruckman Tristan Xerri, who suffered a fractured jaw in last week's win over Richmond.
