Colombia secured their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout stage with a hard fought 1-0 victory over DR Congo in Guadalajara Daniel Muñoz scored the decisive goal in the 76th minute to seal all three points and send Los Cafeteros through to the next round. The result moved Colombia to the top of Group K and strengthened their chances of finishing first ahead of a crucial clash with Portugal.
The victory came after a dominant display in which Colombia created numerous opportunities but struggled to break down a determined DR Congo side for much of the contest.
Muñoz Delivers the Breakthrough
Colombia controlled possession from the opening whistle and consistently pushed forward in search of a goal.
Luis Díaz, James Rodríguez and Jhon Arias were heavily involved as Colombia generated a series of chances throughout the match. However, DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi produced an outstanding performance to keep his team level for more than 75 minutes.
Mpasi denied multiple efforts from distance and remained one of the standout performers on the pitch despite the final result.
The breakthrough eventually arrived when Juan Quintero threaded a pass into the penalty area. Jhon Córdoba’s movement created space for Muñoz, who arrived at the perfect moment before firing a shot that found the bottom corner with the help of a slight deflection.
The goal finally rewarded Colombia for their persistent attacking pressure.
DR Congo Fight Hard Despite Defeat
While Colombia dominated much of the match, DR Congo remained disciplined and difficult to break down.
The African side relied on a compact defensive structure and attempted to create opportunities through quick transitions and set pieces. Their best early chance came when Yoane Wissa and Cédric Bakambu looked to exploit space on the counterattack.
Arthur Masuaku also delivered several dangerous corners that tested the Colombian defence.
After conceding, DR Congo pushed forward in search of an equaliser and produced their strongest spell of the match during the closing stages. Substitute Nathanaël Mbuku injected energy into the attack and forced goalkeeper Camilo Vargas into an important save late in stoppage time.
Despite their efforts, DR Congo were unable to find the breakthrough they needed.
Goalkeeper Mpasi Impresses
Although his team finished on the losing side, Lionel Mpasi earned widespread praise for his performance.
The goalkeeper made a series of crucial saves throughout the match and was largely responsible for keeping DR Congo in contention until the closing stages.
Colombia registered 20 shots, including nine on target, while also having several other dangerous attacks ruled out or blocked before reaching goal.
Mpasi consistently positioned himself well and reacted sharply to prevent the scoreline from becoming more comfortable for Colombia.
His display ensured the contest remained competitive until the final whistle.
Colombia Continue Strong Tournament Form
The victory means Colombia have collected four points and secured qualification for the knockout stage with one group match still to play.
Head coach Néstor Lorenzo will be encouraged by his side’s defensive stability as well as their ability to control matches against difficult opponents.
While Colombia may have lacked clinical finishing at times, the overall performance demonstrated why they are viewed as one of the stronger teams in the tournament.
Daniel Muñoz has also emerged as an unexpected attacking contributor, scoring in consecutive World Cup matches and placing himself among the tournament’s leading scorers.
Group K Picture Takes Shape
The result leaves Colombia in a strong position heading into their final group fixture against Portugal.
A draw would be enough to secure top spot in Group K and potentially provide a more favorable path through the knockout rounds.
For DR Congo, qualification hopes remain alive but they now face a must win encounter against Uzbekistan. Victory would not only keep their campaign alive but also deliver the nation's first ever World Cup win.
As the group stage approaches its conclusion, Colombia have established themselves as serious contenders after combining attacking quality with defensive resilience. Their ability to find results in difficult matches could prove valuable as the tournament progresses.
With knockout qualification secured and momentum building, Colombia will now turn their attention to Portugal in what promises to be one of the most important group stage matches of the tournament.
