Portugal vs Uzbekistan turned into a statement World Cup response in Houston, with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring twice as Portugal national football team surged into a 4-0 lead late in the Group K match.
Roberto Martínez’s side needed a sharper display after their poor opener, and they found it through Ronaldo, Nuno Mendes and an Abdukodir Khusanov own goal. The performance mattered because Portugal showed far more control, while Uzbekistan national football team struggled to handle the speed and movement of their opponents.

Ronaldo Sets The Tone
Nuno Mendes doubled Portugal’s lead in the 17th minute with a curling free-kick after Ronaldo drew attention from the goalkeeper and defensive wall.
Ronaldo then struck in the 39th minute after Bruno Fernandes slid a pass through the lines, allowing the Portugal captain to finish into the far corner. The goal made Ronaldo Portugal’s highest scorer at the World Cup with 10, moving him one clear of Eusebio.
Uzbekistan briefly thought they had pulled one back when Aziz G'aniev rifled a superb strike into the top corner. VAR ruled it out for a foul on João Cancelo in the build-up.
Portugal Control Second Half
Portugal added a fourth on the hour when a low corner caused trouble in the Uzbekistan box.
João Félix flicked the delivery on, and Abdukodir Khusanov turned the ball into his own net under pressure. Ronaldo later went close to a hat-trick, but Abduvokhid Nematov denied him after a defensive error.
Rafael Leao came off the bench and added energy from the left, finishing a sweeping move after Nelson Semedo’s cut-back late in the match.
Uzbekistan supporters still made themselves heard in Houston, but on the pitch the gap was clear as Portugal knocked the ball around with ease.
