New Zealand vs Egypt ended in a 3-1 World Cup defeat for New Zealand national football team on Sunday night, despite defender Finn Surman scoring the opening goal in Group G.
Surman headed in from Tim Payne’s 15th-minute corner to give the All Whites a halftime lead, but Egypt national football team responded with three second-half goals. The result mattered because New Zealand dropped to the bottom of Group G with one point, though they can still reach the knockout stage with a win over Belgium national football team and help from Egypt against Iran national football team.

Surman Gives All Whites Early Hope
Surman timed his run well from the corner and powered a header in from just outside the six-yard box.
“It was a pretty big jump,” Surman said. “I definitely felt that it was a good goal, so I'm pretty happy about that.”
The goal was a rare scoring moment for the defender, who has three professional goals and had previously scored twice for New Zealand national football team.
Surman said his parents were at the match and hoped the goal was "something they remember and something that they're proud of".
Second-Half Collapse Hurts New Zealand
New Zealand national football team carried much of the first-half momentum, but Egypt changed the match after the break.
“I think it shows the highs and lows of football,” Surman said. “That first half, I thought we played really well.”
The All Whites have now conceded five goals across their first two World Cup matches, leaving their defence under pressure before the Belgium clash in Vancouver on Friday.
Captain and striker Chris Wood said New Zealand must keep belief ahead of a difficult final group match.
“We've just got to believe,” Wood said after the match.
“We've done extremely well on the world stage already, but we've got to believe we can go take it up to one of the best teams in the world."
