South Australia's AFL Gather Round extension has been locked in until 2029 after the state government secured a new agreement with the AFL. Announced on June 16, 2026, the deal ensures one of Australian football's biggest fan events remains in Adelaide and regional South Australia for at least three more seasons. The extension matters because Gather Round continues to attract thousands of interstate visitors and delivers a major boost to tourism, hospitality and local businesses.
AFL and Government Back Long-Term Growth
AFL CEO Andrew Dillon praised the event's impact.
“Gather Round has captured the imagination of footy fans and delivered an event like nothing else in Australian sport,” he said.
The updated format will feature a free Friday night player parade through Adelaide's CBD, free public transport, and a marquee fixture designed to encourage fans to stay longer.
Premier Peter Malinauskas highlighted the wider benefits.
“Gather Round is about much more than football – it brings people together, showcases our restaurants and wine regions on a national stage and pours tens of millions of dollars into our economy every year. Gather Round belongs in South Australia.”
Future Venue Expansion Remains Under Review
Officials will continue assessing potential regional venues based on tourism and promotional value. While AFLW integration has been discussed, the league's current focus remains on strengthening the overall football festival experience.
