Japan Netherlands World Cup draw headlines came from a thrilling Group F contest, as Japan and the Netherlands shared a 2-2 result after a lively second half at the FIFA World Cup 2026.
The Netherlands twice led through Virgil van Dijk and Crysencio Summerville, but Japan answered through Keito Nakamura and Daichi Kamada to earn a point that keeps the group finely balanced.
The result followed another Group F build-up story, with Sweden vs Tunisia Confirmed Lineups Set Stage for World Cup Clash adding more weight to the section. Fans can follow official tournament updates through the FIFA website.
Suzuki Keeps Japan Level Early
The first half stayed goalless as Japan’s defence kept the Netherlands away from clear central openings.
The Netherlands had more possession and found a few chances, but Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki made key saves to keep the match level at halftime.
The breakthrough came in the 51st minute when Ryan Gravenberch recycled a Dutch free kick and found captain Virgil van Dijk with a long ball.
Van Dijk’s header into the far corner gave the Netherlands control, but Japan responded quickly.
Second Half Brings Four Goals
Keito Nakamura equalised six minutes later with a clean strike that shifted the tempo of the match.
The Netherlands hit back seven minutes after that, with Crysencio Summerville scoring from the edge of the box to restore their lead.
Japan pushed forward in the final minutes and earned repeated set-piece chances as the Netherlands tried to protect the result.
The pressure told from a corner, with the equaliser first credited to Koki Ogawa before being awarded to Daichi Kamada after a deflection off his head.
The draw leaves wins against Sweden and Tunisia highly important for both teams as Group F tightens.
Japan’s latest result also adds to their recent World Cup record against European sides, after wins over Spain and Germany in 2022 helped them top their group.
