Western Australia prospect Cameron Maynard's backflip celebration became one of the standout moments of the Under-18 National Championships on Sunday after the speedy South Fremantle youngster celebrated his first goal against South Australia with a spectacular acrobatic display at Mineral Resources Park. The celebration quickly caught attention across the football community as WA secured an important 11.12 (78) to 10.6 (66) victory over the reigning champions.
Maynard Delivers a Memorable Moment
The exciting play unfolded early in the contest when Maynard used his pace to chase down a loose ball. After evading an opponent, he calmly dribbled through WA's opening goal of the afternoon.
What followed drew just as much attention as the goal itself.
The talented youngster launched into a cartwheel before completing a backflip, bringing the crowd to life and giving his teammates plenty to celebrate. Fans around the ground immediately reacted to the unexpected display, while teammates rushed in to congratulate him.
Speaking after the match, Maynard admitted the celebration had been discussed well before the game.
"Throughout the week, all the boys were asking ‘are you going to do a backflip’, and I was just like ‘yeah’," Maynard said.
"I was hoping to kick the first goal, just so I could get it over and done with.
"It was good. It felt good."
WA Coach Supports Players Showing Personality
Western Australia coach Marc Webb had no issue with the celebration and said players should be allowed to express themselves provided they continue contributing to the team's performance.
The coach praised the individuality within the squad and welcomed the excitement such moments can bring to junior football.
"Everyone’s different, there’s an individual nature to it," Webb said.
"As long as he’s playing his role and doing the right things for us, he can celebrate in the right way. It doesn’t worry me one bit.
"That part of the game is exciting . . . it’s not the first time, we had Koby Evans do that a couple of years ago."
Webb's comments reflected the relaxed atmosphere around the celebration, with the focus remaining firmly on WA's strong performance against one of the competition's top teams.
Another Surprise Backflip
Remarkably, Maynard was not the only player showing off his gymnastics skills during the match.
West Coast Next Generation Academy prospect Lachlan McGlade also completed a backflip later in the third quarter after producing a key moment for his side.
Maynard admitted he was surprised by his teammate's effort.
"I didn’t think he could do one, and then he just pulled it out," he said.
The second celebration added to the entertainment value of the contest and further lifted WA's energy during an important stage of the match.
WA Holds Off South Australia
While the celebrations grabbed headlines, WA's performance on the field was equally important.
Both Maynard and McGlade finished with two goals as Western Australia built a lead before withstanding a late challenge from South Australia. The visitors pushed hard in the final stages, but WA remained composed and secured a valuable 12-point win.
The result represented a dramatic improvement from last year's meeting between the two sides when South Australia recorded a dominant 76-point victory.
For WA, the win provides confidence heading deeper into the national championships and offers AFL recruiters another opportunity to assess several promising draft prospects.

Maynard's goal and celebration may become one of the defining images of this year's championships, but WA will be even happier with the result itself. A year after suffering a heavy defeat to South Australia, the home side delivered a much stronger performance and left Mineral Resources Park with a statement victory.
