South Korea vs Czechia World Cup action delivered an early Group A statement on Thursday, with South Korea coming from behind to win 2-1 in Guadalajara and take a major step toward the knockout rounds.
Czechia struck first through Ladislav Krejcí, but goals from Hwang In-beom and Oh Hyeon-gyu turned the match around in front of a strong South Korean following.
The comeback added to a busy FIFA World Cup week, following Jude Bellingham England Camp Admission Adds Edge to World Cup Build-Up, as early group results begin to shape the tournament picture. Fans can follow official updates through the FIFA website.
Czechia Strike First in Tight Contest
The first half offered few clear chances, with both teams struggling to create rhythm in the final third.
Czechia, making their first FIFA World Cup appearance in 20 years, broke through in the 59th minute when the 6-foot-3 Krejcí headed in from a throw-in routine.
That goal shifted the match, as South Korea pushed higher and moved the ball with more purpose.
The pressure paid off in the 67th minute when Hwang In-beom scored the equaliser to bring South Korea level.
Oh Hyeon-gyu Completes Turnaround
Czechia thought they had reclaimed the lead soon after, but the effort was ruled out for offside.
South Korea then punished that reprieve, with Oh Hyeon-gyu scoring a fine winner to seal all three points.
Captain Son Heung-min was heavily involved and finished with a match-high six shots, although the Los Angeles Football Club forward was held scoreless.
Mexico also opened Group A with a 2-0 win over South Africa, leaving Mexico and South Korea level on three points after the first round of matches.
South Korea now face Mexico on Thursday in a match that could decide control of the group, while Czechia meet South Africa before a likely must-win clash against Mexico.
