The Broncos vs Dragons clash delivered an early surprise on Sunday at Lang Park in Brisbane, with St George Illawarra jumping to a 12-0 lead inside the opening 10 minutes. The Round 13 NRL contest mattered for both sides, as Brisbane entered the match on a three-game losing streak while the Dragons were still searching for their first win of the season. Early tries from Val Holmes and Dan Atkinson gave the visitors momentum and silenced the home crowd.
Dragons Make Fast Start at Lang Park
The Dragons capitalized on their early field position and struck first through Val Holmes in the sixth minute. Holmes finished off a smart attacking move after receiving support from Hamish Stewart to put St George Illawarra ahead 6-0.
Only minutes later, Dan Atkinson produced one of the game's standout moments. The playmaker chipped the ball ahead, regathered it himself, and crossed for another try. Following a successful conversion from Holmes, the Dragons extended their advantage to 12-0.
Brisbane's difficult start was made worse when captain Adam Reynolds was placed on report for a hip-drop tackle incident. Despite the return of key players including Payne Haas, Pat Carrigan, and Kotoni Staggs, the Broncos struggled to gain control during the opening exchanges.
As Dragons assistant coach Dean Young said before the match, "We just focus on the improvement day on day." The visitors showed exactly that with a confident opening spell.
