The Jacob Bethell Royal Challengers Bengaluru stint has become a focal point of discussion as the young Englishman prepares for the Raipur leg of IPL 2026. Speaking ahead of the clash against Mumbai Indians, Jacob Bethell dismissed suggestions that he should have prioritized the County Championship back home to prepare for the Test summer.
The all-rounder believes that competing in the world’s marquee T20 tournament will accelerate his development rather than hinder his red-ball prospects. Despite critics questioning his lack of game time early in the season, Jacob Bethell remains firm that he has made the right career move.

Deflecting External Pressure
The debate gained traction after Alastair Cook suggested Jacob Bethell was wasting time on the sidelines instead of honing his skills in first-class cricket. However, Kevin Pietersen countered that the exposure to the high-pressure IPL environment provides learning opportunities that domestic cricket cannot match.
"This is the marquee tournament of the year, with some of the best cricketers in the world playing in it," Jacob Bethell said. "I definitely don't think it's going to hurt my career or stop me from getting better. I think it's going to do the opposite."
Finding Rhythm Alongside Virat Kohli
Since Phil Salt was sidelined with a finger injury, Jacob Bethell has opened the innings in four matches, though high scores have remained elusive. He was spotted working closely with Virat Kohli during a rain-affected nets session in Raipur, showing the management still has faith in his potential.
"It's cool, I've said it multiple times how cool it is to bat with him and be involved in the dressing room with him," he remarked. For more official updates on the tournament schedule and player stats, visit the IPL website.
Jacob Bethell admitted that finding his touch has been difficult with limited time in the middle. However, he is hungry to contribute to a winning cause as Royal Challengers Bengaluru look to snap a two-game losing streak.
