Fremantle captain Alex Pearce remains fully committed to the Dockers despite growing discussion about a possible move to Tasmania when the AFL’s newest club enters the league. Dockers CEO Simon Garlick said Pearce is focused only on helping Fremantle win after another strong start to the 2026 season, making it clear speculation is not a current issue for the club.
Garlick Backs Pearce Commitment
Pearce, who grew up in Tasmania, has often been linked with the incoming Devils side and a possible leadership role. But Garlick said the defender’s attention is fixed on Fremantle.
“He is very enthusiastic to do everything he possibly can to make sure he can help us win. That’s his focus,” Garlick said.
“I think that’s his driving motivator. Understand that he has another 18 months left on his contract and it’s not something that he’s even thinking or considering.”
Garlick added that Pearce has never looked more determined during his time at the club.
“I’m coming up to seven years at the club and have never seen him as focused and driven.”
Why Tasmania Interest Continues
The link is easy to understand. Pearce is one of the AFL’s most respected key defenders, a proven captain and a proud Tasmanian. Former stars Nick Riewoldt and Matthew Richardson both said he would be an ideal foundation leader for the new club.
Still, Fremantle views him as central to its current push. Pearce has become known for leading through actions rather than loud speeches.
“He is quietly spoken,” Garlick said. “It’s so much by action, how he carries himself.”
Strong Form in 2026
Pearce has already delivered major moments this season. His late smother against Adelaide in round three saved a match, while his calm leadership has helped Fremantle build momentum. Teammates were quick to celebrate the captain after that win, with Brennan Cox saying: “He is our captain for a reason.”
The Dockers believe their best football is still ahead. For now, Pearce appears central to that mission.
