Rugby Australia $70.6 million surplus was the headline result from the governing body’s Annual General Meeting in Sydney on April 22, after the 2025 British & Irish Lions tour helped drive a record financial turnaround. Rugby Australia announced total revenue of $262.2 million, cleared debt early, and built cash reserves of $31.4 million. The result matters because it gives the sport stronger footing before Australia hosts the 2027 Men’s and 2029 Women’s Rugby World Cups.
Lions Tour Delivers Huge Boost
Packed stadiums were central to the result. Rugby Australia reported $146.8 million in matchday revenue, showing how strongly fans responded to the Lions series and Wallabies Tests. The biggest crowd came at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, where 90,307 watched the second Test. Sell-out crowds also greeted matches in Sydney, Brisbane, and Perth.
The energy around the grounds was clear throughout the season, with large travelling support and loud home crowds helping create major-event atmosphere at every stop.
Growth Beyond the Elite Game
The financial gain was matched by growth at community level. The ‘Get Into Rugby’ program produced a 24% rise in junior registrations, while senior XV participation moved above pre-pandemic levels.
Phil Waugh said: “We are delivering on our promise to reset the game’s finances, restore pride and set a new strategic course for Australian Rugby.”
Daniel Herbert added: “Australian Rugby now has an excellent platform as we prepare for the generational opportunities presented by the home Men’s and Women’s Rugby World Cups.”
