The Fremantle Dockers weather update ahead of their AFL clash with the Richmond Tigers shows improved conditions at Optus Stadium on Saturday, with heavy rain expected to ease before the 1:15pm bounce down in Perth after days of wild weather caused by ex-cyclone Narelle.
Fremantle and Richmond are set to meet in Round action with both teams monitoring conditions closely, as the Dockers push for a strong home performance while the Tigers aim to overcome a difficult start to the season. The weather shift matters, as it is likely to influence ball movement, marking contests, and overall match tempo.
Rain eases ahead of bounce down
According to the Bureau of Meteorology, rainfall is expected to reduce significantly before the match, with just one millimetre forecast in the hours leading up to the game and little to no rain during play.
Meteorologist Jessica Lingard said conditions would improve through the morning, although spectators are still advised to prepare for possible showers.
“It is still a pretty good idea if you are heading to the game this afternoon to have your wet-weather gear,” Lingard said.
“The bulk of the rainfall is likely starting to clear away just after 11am. We are seeing rainfall slowly start to reduce.”
From an on-ground perspective, early arrivals at Optus Stadium experienced steady rain, but conditions began to settle closer to game time. Fremantle forward Josh Treacy was seen completing his usual pre-match routine as the rain eased, a sign the worst of the weather had passed.
Wind and conditions still a factor
While rain is expected to clear, wind may still influence the contest. Lingard indicated a shifting breeze throughout the afternoon, starting as a southerly before turning south-westerly and then westerly.
In AFL terms, even moderate wind can affect kicking accuracy and long entries inside 50, particularly at Optus Stadium where crosswinds can challenge players’ ball control.
Both Fremantle and Richmond are likely to adjust their approach, placing greater emphasis on contested possession and ground-level play if conditions remain unpredictable.
Impact of ex-cyclone Narelle
The improved forecast comes after ex-cyclone Narelle caused widespread disruption across Western Australia earlier in the week. The system, which has now weakened into a tropical low, brought strong winds and heavy rain across large parts of the state.
At its peak, the system recorded wind gusts of up to 100 km per hour in some regions after previously tracking as a category four system along the coast.
Despite the broader impact, Perth conditions have stabilised in time for the AFL fixture, allowing the match between Fremantle Dockers and Richmond Tigers to proceed without major weather concerns.
Match context for Fremantle and Richmond
For Fremantle, improved conditions offer a better opportunity to execute their ball movement and forward structure as they look to secure a key early-season win.
Richmond, dealing with a challenging start to the AFL season, will also benefit from drier conditions after preparing for what initially appeared to be a heavily rain-affected contest.
Weather often plays a crucial role in AFL outcomes, and while the worst of the rain may have passed, both teams will remain alert to changing conditions throughout the match.
