Group One-winning sprinter Crocetti made his much-anticipated seasonal return in fine style, taking out his 1100m trial at Te Rapa on Tuesday morning with ease. The gelding, prepared by Danny Walker and Arron Tata, reminded racing fans why he has been one of the most consistent performers in recent seasons as he effortlessly cruised to a two-length victory.
The five-year-old son of Zacinto jumped sharply from the gates, settling comfortably outside the early leader Boss ‘N’ Highheels. Without any urging from his rider, Crocetti found the front upon straightening and quickly put daylight on his rivals. He lengthened out with his trademark stride, hitting the line strongly ahead of Lachie, leaving his connections delighted with his progress.
Trainer Danny Walker, who has guided Crocetti throughout his career, was pleased with the gelding’s condition and the way he handled his first public outing of the season.
“He had a nice gallop,” Walker said. “He is looking good, he is good in the coat, and he has trialled well, so we can’t be any happier than that.”
A Positive Step After Australian Trip
Crocetti has been back in full training for a couple of months following his brief Australian venture earlier this year. In April, he contested the AUD$5 million Quokka at Ascot over 1200m but failed to fire, finishing last in what was a rare blemish on his otherwise outstanding record.
Despite the disappointment across the Tasman, Walker is confident the trip left no lasting impact on his stable star. He noted that Crocetti returned home in good order and has continued to thrive in work since resuming preparations.
“He took no ill-effects from the trip,” Walker explained. “He is looking forward to the season ahead, and so are we. He has come through his work well and looks like he is ready to kick on.”
Spring Targets in Sight
The immediate plan is for Crocetti to head to Rotorua next month to contest the Sweynesse Stakes on October 12. The race will mark his official spring campaign opener, and Walker believes it is the right stepping stone to get the gelding’s campaign underway.
“He will probably go to Rotorua on the 12th of October for the Sweynesse Stakes,” Walker confirmed. “We will play it by ear and see how he comes through Rotorua and make a plan after that. There’s not a lot around really until Christmas time.”
The lack of immediate options on the racing calendar means connections may need to be selective in their approach over the next few months. However, given Crocetti’s proven ability at the highest level, there is little doubt suitable races will present themselves as the spring and summer carnivals progress.
A Glittering Record
Bred and raced by prominent owner-breeder Daniel Nakhle, Crocetti has already established himself as one of New Zealand’s premier sprinters. From 15 career starts, he has won nine times and placed on three further occasions, amassing more than $1.4 million in prizemoney.
His standout performances include memorable victories in the Group 1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m) and the Group 1 Railway (1200m), races that stamped his class and secured his reputation among the elite of New Zealand racing. With his explosive turn of foot and remarkable consistency, Crocetti has become a crowd favourite, drawing attention whenever he steps onto the track.
The Road Ahead
While the Australian venture may not have produced the desired result earlier this year, it highlighted Crocetti’s readiness to test himself against the best in the region. With another preparation under his belt and the confidence of his connections, further trans-Tasman campaigns are not out of the question. Much will depend on how he progresses in the Sweynesse Stakes and subsequent outings this season.
Crocetti’s adaptability across distances and his ability to measure up in both sprint and mile races gives Walker and Tata plenty of options. His trial win at Te Rapa was more than just a return to public view—it was a statement that Crocetti remains a formidable force in the sprinting ranks.
As spring racing heats up, Crocetti’s return adds another layer of intrigue to the season. With a proven record, loyal ownership, and trainers confident in his fitness, fans can expect to see plenty more of the talented gelding as he chases further Group One glory.
For now, the team behind Crocetti is content to take things one step at a time, beginning with Rotorua in October. If his Te Rapa trial is anything to go by, the star sprinter is primed to make an impact once again.
