Half Yours, the rising star co-trained by father-and-son duo Tony and Calvin McEvoy, has been handed a 1.5kg penalty following his emphatic victory in the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield last Saturday. The win not only confirmed his formidable ability on the track but also secured him a coveted spot in the $5 million Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) on October 18.
Ridden by Jamie Melham, Half Yours dominated the field, defeating Berkshire Breeze by an impressive 3.5 lengths. His performance was so decisive that Racing Victoria’s handicapping team moved swiftly to adjust his weight for the Caulfield Cup, assigning him a 52.5kg allocation for the Group 1 feature.
With this penalty in place, Half Yours joins the ranks of horses already exempt from the Caulfield Cup ballot, including Bankers Choice, Kovalica, and the recently crowned Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) winner Sir Delius. Despite being lightly raced, the five-year-old has quickly become one of the standout names in the spring racing carnival. Bookmakers have reacted accordingly, pricing him as a joint $6 Caulfield Cup favourite alongside Chris Waller-trained Buckaroo, who finished runner-up in the Underwood Stakes and is one of the topweights at 59kg, along with Light Infantry Man.
Half Yours also holds an entry in the iconic $10 million Melbourne Cup (3200m). While his Caulfield Cup penalty increases his weight to 52.5kg, he remains at 51kg for the Melbourne Cup, reflecting the 2kg difference in weight scales between the two major races this year. Nevertheless, the adjustment significantly improves his position in the order of entry, moving him from 60th to 47th place.
“Half Yours won the Naturalism Stakes in effortless style, and the dominant nature of his performance by an expanding margin is worthy of a reassessment in both cups,” said David Hegan, Racing Victoria’s Head of Handicapping.
“In the Caulfield Cup, he takes a 1.5kg penalty from his previous minimum weight of 51kg, which was the same penalty handed to the 2022 Naturalism winner Smokin’ Romans when he was also on the minimum weight in the Caulfield Cup.
“In the Melbourne Cup, his true weight based on his handicap form would now be 50.5kg, however with the minimum lifted to 51kg this year he was already handicapped on the limit weight and thus his weight won’t change. This takes into account the fact that Caulfield Cup weights are 2kg higher than Melbourne Cup weights this year due to the topweights.
“As Half Yours is now 9kg below the weight-for-age benchmark for an older male in the Melbourne Cup, he moves up the order of entry to 47th. To guarantee a start in the Melbourne Cup, he will likely need to gain a further penalty or win a golden ticket race.”
The weekend also saw movement in the Caulfield Cup order of entry for several other notable contenders. Kris Lees’ imported stayer Adelaide River, part-owned by seven-time Melbourne Cup winner Lloyd Williams, moved into contention following his narrow runner-up finish behind Birdman in the Group 3 Kingston Town Stakes (2000m) at Randwick. Adelaide River, now carrying 54kg, passed the first elimination clause for the Caulfield Cup and climbed from 66th to 32nd in the updated order of entry.
The Kingston Town Stakes is run under set weights and penalties, meaning Chris Waller-trained Birdman is ineligible to receive a penalty after claiming his first Australian victory. The Caulfield Cup only imposes penalties on winners of Group or Listed handicap races of 1600m or further, and similarly for the Melbourne Cup, which also includes winners of Group or Listed non-handicap races of 2300m or more. The Kingston Town, however, does not meet this criterion.
Another horse moving closer to a Caulfield Cup start is Royal Supremacy, owned by Australian Bloodstock. After finishing second in the Group 3 Newcastle Cup (2300m) on Friday, he passed the first elimination clause and rose from equal 76th to 58th on the order of entry. This result provides connections with a significant boost, keeping their hopes alive for a start in the lucrative Group 1 contest.
Half Yours’ progression reflects the increasing depth and quality of spring contenders. His dominant victory in the Naturalism Stakes not only showcased his class but also highlighted the strategic weight adjustments that ensure competitive fairness across major handicaps. Analysts have noted that horses with a similar trajectory—winning by a clear margin in lead-up races—often translate that form into strong performances in longer, more prestigious events.
The 1.5kg penalty, while notable, is unlikely to dampen Half Yours’ credentials. Historically, horses penalised after a Naturalism Stakes triumph have gone on to make significant impacts in the Caulfield Cup. The McEvoys and their team will now focus on maintaining the horse’s fitness and ensuring he peaks at the right time for the Group 1 challenges ahead.
With the Caulfield Cup only weeks away, the spring carnival promises thrilling racing as connections of top-tier stayers and middle-distance performers carefully plot their courses. Half Yours’ natural progression from a standout in the Naturalism Stakes to a leading Caulfield Cup contender underscores the tactical and physical demands of elite Australian racing. The narrative of penalties, weight adjustments, and race exemptions ensures that every victory has both immediate rewards and strategic consequences for upcoming Group 1 events.
