Omar Artan has returned home after being denied entry to the United States, ending his hopes of making history at the FIFA World Cup. The Somali referee was expected to become the first official from Somalia to referee at a World Cup, but immigration authorities prevented him from entering the host nation over the weekend. The decision means Artan will miss the tournament entirely despite being selected among FIFA’s match officials.
Artan was due to join fellow referees and assistant referees preparing for the World Cup in North America. However, after arriving in Miami via Istanbul, he was ruled inadmissible by US authorities and was unable to continue his journey.
The development represents a significant setback both for Artan personally and for Somali football, which had viewed his appointment as a landmark achievement.
Artan Speaks After Returning Home
Speaking at Istanbul Airport before boarding a flight back to Somalia, Artan remained positive despite the disappointment.
“I feel very good now,” Artan said.
“I wanted to thank FIFA for supporting me all the way and the Somali people, also. So, I am very grateful for FIFA and CAF, also.”
His comments reflected gratitude toward the organisations that supported his rise through international officiating ranks.
Artan had been selected as part of FIFA’s officiating team for the World Cup and was widely expected to break new ground as the first Somali referee to take charge of a match at the tournament.
Instead, his World Cup dream ended before it began.
Somalia Seeks Answers
Somalia’s government confirmed it attempted to intervene after learning Artan had been denied entry.
The country’s sports ministry said officials held discussions with both FIFA and United States authorities in an effort to resolve the situation, but those efforts were unsuccessful.
“His international achievements are a source of honour and pride for the Somali people,” the ministry said in a statement.
The Somali Football Federation also expressed concern over the outcome and revealed it had not received a formal explanation for the decision.
Officials said they are continuing to work with FIFA and relevant authorities to better understand the circumstances that led to Artan being denied entry.
The incident has generated significant attention within Somali football circles, where Artan is regarded as one of the country's most accomplished sporting figures.
FIFA Confirms Referee Will Miss Tournament
FIFA confirmed that Artan would be unable to participate in the World Cup.
A spokesperson stated that the governing body does not play a role in host nation immigration procedures and had been informed that Artan’s status would not change.
“FIFA is not involved in host country immigration processes, including visa adjudications, and has been informed by authorities that Mr Artan's status will not be changed at present,” the spokesperson said.
The situation creates a logistical problem that prevents Artan from officiating anywhere in the tournament, even in matches scheduled outside the United States.
FIFA head of match officials Pierluigi Collina has established the referee training and preparation base in Miami. All selected referees and assistant referees are required to remain at the facility throughout the tournament for operational and security reasons.
As a result, Artan cannot be assigned to matches in Canada or Mexico without first entering the United States.
Travel Restrictions in Focus
US Customs and Border Protection confirmed that a Somali national arriving at Miami International Airport from Istanbul on Saturday had been found inadmissible due to vetting concerns.
The agency did not identify the individual by name, but the timing and circumstances matched Artan’s arrival.
The case has drawn renewed attention to US immigration policies affecting citizens from certain countries.
Last year, the Trump administration implemented travel restrictions affecting nationals from 12 countries, including Somalia.
While authorities have not publicly detailed the specific reasons behind Artan’s inadmissibility determination, the decision effectively prevented him from participating in one of the biggest events in world sport.
Historic Opportunity Lost
Artan’s absence will be felt throughout the tournament.
His selection had been celebrated across Somalia as a milestone for the nation’s football community and as recognition of the progress made by African referees on the international stage.
Over recent years, Artan has officiated major continental competitions under the Confederation of African Football and earned a reputation as one of East Africa’s leading referees.
His anticipated World Cup debut was expected to inspire a new generation of Somali officials and football participants.
Instead, the tournament will proceed without him, leaving many unanswered questions about the circumstances surrounding his exclusion.
For now, Artan returns home with the support of FIFA, CAF and the Somali football community, but the opportunity to make history on football’s biggest stage has been taken away.
