Australia winger Nestory Irankunda has explained the personal reason behind wearing No. 17 at the FIFA World Cup 2026 after impressing in the Socceroos' final warm-up match against Switzerland. The 20-year-old attacker was one of Australia's standout performers in the 1-1 draw and continues to attract attention ahead of the team's opening World Cup clash against Türkiye.
Irankunda Explains Why He Chose No. 17
The Watford winger said the decision was linked to his time with Australia's youth teams.
"The shirt number, it was my fault. I did choose 17," Irankunda said.
"Only because I was wearing 17 when I was back with the Joeys. To where it again at a World Cup now after so many years playing with the juniors, it’s going to be crazy.
"So, just keep the number. Keep it going. Happy to keep it for the rest of my career with the national team."
His performance against Switzerland showed why many fans are eager to see him start in Australia's tournament opener. Irankunda nearly scored with a powerful long-range effort that rattled the crossbar, drawing loud reactions from supporters.
Teammates Back Young Star
Striker Tete Yengi praised Irankunda's impact and attacking threat.
"When he’s on fire, he’s almost unstoppable," Yengi said.
Irankunda has also been linked with Premier League clubs following reports that Everton and Crystal Palace are monitoring his progress. However, the winger insisted his focus remains on the World Cup.
"I try not to think about it too much, but obviously I have my goals and my ambitions, you know," he said.
Looking Ahead to Türkiye
Australia will begin its FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign against Türkiye on Sunday, with coach Tony Popovic yet to decide whether Irankunda will start or be used as an impact substitute.
