The 2026 Men’s World Cup is finally ready to begin, with Canada, Mexico and the United States set to host the biggest edition of the tournament and move attention back to the football after months of off-field debate.
Ticket prices, parking fees, heat concerns, water rules, political questions and FIFA talking points have dominated the build-up, but history suggests the games will soon take over.

Players Ready To Take Centre Stage
World Cups are remembered for players and moments, not pre-tournament noise. Lionel Messi and Argentina shaped memories of Qatar 2022, while Kylian Mbappé lit up Russia 2018 and Germany’s 7-1 win over Brazil became the defining image of 2014.
This tournament has the same promise, with Spain’s Lamine Yamal, England captain Harry Kane, Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo, Argentina star Lionel Messi and United States forward Christian Pulisic all ready to command attention.
Fans can follow official tournament fixtures and updates through the FIFA World Cup website.
New Nations Chase Their Moment
The expanded 48-team format gives more nations a chance to create a lasting World Cup memory. Curaçao, Cape Verde, Jordan and Uzbekistan will all try to follow the kind of path that once put Cameroon, Senegal and Morocco in the spotlight.
Mexico open the tournament against South Africa on Thursday, with the first round of group matches likely to set the tone for a long summer of football.
The larger format means 32 teams will reach the knockout stage, opening the door for outsiders to push deep into the tournament.
Heavyweights Still Carry The Trophy Hopes
Argentina, Brazil, England, France, Germany and Spain enter as the familiar title threats, while Portugal may be the strongest contender chasing a first World Cup crown.
By the July 19 final in New Jersey, the early noise should feel distant. New names will have emerged, older icons may have taken their last bow, and the football will have written the story.
