Australia's concerns over Marnus Labuschagne's ODI form deepened on Thursday after another disappointing outing in the series-deciding defeat to Pakistan in Lahore. The Australian No. 3 managed just 19 runs before being run out in a costly mix-up with Josh Inglis, contributing to a batting collapse that saw Australia bowled out for 157. With the ICC Cricket World Cup approaching, Labuschagne's prolonged struggles have become a major talking point for selectors.
Run-Out Sparks Another Difficult Day
Labuschagne's dismissal came during a key stage of the innings when Australia was attempting to build momentum. A direct hit from Pakistan spinner Arafat Minhas caught the batter short of his ground while attempting a second run.
Speaking after the match, Inglis said: "It was clearly a lack of communication."
He added: "Run outs happen in cricket, they’re a part of the game."
Australia eventually lost by four wickets, surrendering the series 2-1.
World Cup Spot Under Pressure
The Queensland batter finished the series with scores of 0, 5 and 19. His ODI average since 2024 has dropped significantly, raising questions about his place in Australia's plans for next year's World Cup in South Africa.
Selectors are expected to welcome back Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head for the upcoming Bangladesh series, while emerging players are pushing for opportunities. That competition could place additional pressure on Labuschagne's position in the middle order.
Despite his international struggles, Labuschagne enjoyed a productive domestic one-day season and has historically performed well in South Africa, where he averages more than 61 in ODI cricket.
What's Next?
Australia begins its ODI series against Bangladesh in Mirpur next week, giving Labuschagne another chance to regain form before World Cup planning intensifies.
