Victoria's parliament paid an emotional tribute to Neale Daniher on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, following the AFL icon's death in late May. Lawmakers from across the political spectrum honoured Daniher's impact on motor neurone disease (MND) awareness, with Labor MP Emma Vulin sharing a deeply personal story about the support she received after her own diagnosis in 2024. The tribute highlighted why Daniher's work continues to matter to thousands of Australians affected by the disease.
Emotional Tribute in Parliament
Vulin became emotional while recalling how Daniher welcomed her and her partner into his home shortly after her diagnosis.
"He didn't have to, because he didn't know me from a bar of soap, but he invited my partner, Matt, and me into his home."
She said Daniher openly discussed the challenges ahead while also providing encouragement and hope to her family.
A Legacy Beyond Football
Premier Jacinta Allan praised Daniher for transforming public understanding of MND, while Opposition Leader Jess Wilson said, "He transformed his personal battle into a national cause."
Daniher co-founded FightMND and became the face of the annual Big Freeze campaign, which has raised millions for research. A state funeral will be held at the MCG on June 10, while the annual Big Freeze event will take place before Melbourne's King's Birthday clash with Collingwood.
