American MMA icon Ronda Rousey made a stunning return to the cage on Saturday night in California, defeating Gina Carano in just 17 seconds with her trademark armbar submission. The long-awaited comeback fight marked Rousey’s first MMA appearance in nearly 10 years, while Carano stepped back into competition for the first time in 17 years. The result quickly became one of the biggest combat sports talking points of the weekend because of how fast and decisive the finish was.
Rousey wastes no time in comeback fight
The crowd inside the California arena barely had time to settle before the fight was over. As soon as the bell rang, Rousey exploded forward, took Carano to the mat, and instantly moved into position for the armbar that defined much of her UFC career.
“I really didn't want to hurt her,” Rousey said.
“Luckily it was just beautiful martial arts, that's what it is.”
Fans inside the venue erupted the moment the tap came. Many were still standing and recording the opening exchange on their phones when the referee stepped in to stop the contest.
Rousey later laughed when asked whether she considered extending the fight for the fans.
“Hell no,” she said. “My husband and my kids are watching me. I don't want to put them through anything more than I have to.”
Gina Carano stays positive after defeat
Despite the quick loss, Carano appeared relaxed and smiling afterward. The two fighters embraced in the cage and shared a respectful moment after years of mutual admiration.
“I felt so ready,” Carano said. “I've never felt that good. But I haven't been here for 17 years ... and I wanted to hit her.”
The matchup brought together two pioneers of women’s MMA. Carano helped bring attention to women’s fighting during the late 2000s, while Rousey later became the face of the UFC’s women’s division.
