Defensive Dominance and Statistics
Alex Pearce is currently averaging 4.5 spoils per game and sits sixth in the league for intercept marks, marking a career best run of form. Justin Longmuir believes this output is a direct result of the captain finally achieving physical continuity after years of injury setbacks.
“I would think he deserves to be there. I haven’t watched every team as closely as the selectors, but he’d be in my team,” Longmuir said regarding the selection debate.
Leadership Under Pressure
Beyond the stats, the coach highlighted how the skipper’s voice and connection with teammates have stabilized the group during momentum swings. Justin Longmuir noted that the defender’s preparation has allowed him to play with a newfound sense of freedom.
“When the momentum is against us, he’s always our loudest player and connecting his teammates and keeping us on track,” the coach added. Backline coach Jade Rawlings echoed these sentiments, suggesting the star is perhaps the most underrated leader in the competition.
