Collingwood’s quest to refresh its playing list ahead of the 2025 AFL season has begun with four players departing the club, headlined by 2023 premiership hero Oleg Markov. The Magpies confirmed that Markov, along with forward Ash Johnson, defender Charlie Dean and midfielder Fin Macrae, have all been delisted.
The moves mark the first significant list management decisions of the off-season for the reigning premiers, who are determined to balance loyalty to past contributors with the need to evolve their squad for another premiership tilt.
Markov’s Short but Impactful Stint
Markov’s exit will come as a shock to many fans given his role in Collingwood’s drought-breaking 2023 premiership. Signed through the Supplementary Selection Period (SSP) on the eve of that season, the rebounding defender became a valuable cog in Craig McRae’s backline.
The Belarus-born defender played 43 games in black and white, adding to his earlier stints at Richmond and the Gold Coast Suns, where he amassed 51 matches. Known for his explosive speed and ability to generate run out of defence, Markov’s football journey has been one of persistence and adaptability.
Despite his contributions, the club has decided to move in a different direction, opening up opportunities for emerging players to claim his spot.
Dean’s Promise Unfulfilled
Charlie Dean’s delisting is another notable decision. A promising key defender, Dean was taken with pick two in the 2022 rookie draft after starring for Williamstown in the VFL, where he won the prestigious Fothergill-Round-Mitchell Medal.
Dean managed 12 senior games with Collingwood, showing glimpses of his defensive craft, but struggled to establish himself in a backline boasting experienced names like Darcy Moore, Isaac Quaynor and Brayden Maynard. Injuries and inconsistency limited his chances, and the Magpies have now chosen to reshape their defensive depth chart.
Johnson’s Rollercoaster Run
Forward Ash Johnson, one of Collingwood’s most entertaining players in recent seasons, has also been let go. Johnson made his debut in 2022 and quickly became a fan favourite with his spectacular marking ability and knack for clutch goals.
Across 27 games, Johnson kicked 36 goals, including 21 majors in 15 matches during the 2023 campaign. However, injury derailed his 2024 season, with limited opportunities to build on his momentum. At 26, Johnson may still attract interest from rival clubs looking for a forward with flair and upside.
Macrae’s Unlucky Exit
The departure of midfielder Fin Macrae closes the chapter on a player who never quite had the chance to flourish at senior level. Selected with pick 19 in the 2020 national draft, Macrae played 21 games over five seasons but could not cement a regular spot in Collingwood’s star-studded midfield brigade.
While consistently performing at VFL level, the 22-year-old was competing for opportunities against the likes of Nick Daicos, Jordan De Goey, Tom Mitchell and Jack Crisp. Macrae’s talent remains undeniable, and his youth suggests he could yet carve out a meaningful career elsewhere if given the chance.
Leppitsch Praises Departing Quartet
Collingwood’s general manager of list and talent strategy, Justin Leppitsch, acknowledged the significance of the decision and the quality of the players departing.
“This time of year is always difficult, but we commend the group on the maturity and respect they’ve shown throughout this process,” Leppitsch said in a club statement.
“We thank Oleg for his contributions to our Club. He played a key role in the 2023 AFL Premiership and has had a profound impact on our AFL program.
“Ash, Charlie and Fin, thank you for your dedication and commitment to the Club throughout your time in the black and white. They’ve all shown great resilience and have all left a long-lasting impact on the playing group.
“All four individuals are quality people, and we do sincerely wish each of them the best with their next chapter, on and off the field.”
What It Means for Collingwood
The list changes reflect Collingwood’s approach to staying competitive in an increasingly tight premiership race. By freeing up list spots, the Magpies can target young talent in the national draft or pursue strategic acquisitions during the trade period.
While the departure of a premiership player like Markov underscores the ruthless nature of AFL list management, it also signals the club’s intent to maintain flexibility and ensure long-term success.
Supporters will remember the impact each player had on the club, particularly Markov’s contribution during the triumphant 2023 season. Yet as Collingwood look ahead, these tough calls may be essential in setting up the next phase of their premiership pursuit.
For now, the Magpies will turn their focus to the upcoming draft and trade window, where list management decisions made today could shape the club’s fortunes for years to come.
